LONDON POSTCARD COMPANY
Cult Television.
Mark Routh, Modern postcard author and collector.
My dictionary describes CULT as 'devotion to a person, idea or activity' which perhaps does describe some of the many collectors up and down the country who spend their time hunting down collectable items relating to the 'Cult' television programmes of the 1960's (and more often than not some of the 1970's shows). Although these decades have gone, and we are informed that TV has moved on some, we still have access to the old favourites due, mainly, to the popularity of both satellite and cable television (not to mention the many video releases). This has meant that more collectors have joined the hunt for items depicting the Avengers and the Prisoner, amongst many other characters. Thankfully the London Postcard Company have expertly leaped into the collectors market with a wide range of Postcards which have been designed to show the best aspects of these old 'Cult' programmes. With imaginative use of both text and relevant logos this company have produced items which just scream out to be collected. Many of the designs from the large series of both Avengers and Prisoner postcards depict poster type designs which have been crafted by LPC staff, in fact the company released four specially designed Avengers posters (which were later depicted in four postcards, thus increasing the postcard range). As a collector of television related postcards I have LPC to thank for a range of postcards which include the only official postcards depicting the original 1960's 'Lost in Space' series. I was fortunate to meet the actor Mark Goddard, who played the character Colonel West in the series, on his first ever convention visit to Great Britain. I showed him the postcard set and he was much impressed having not seen them before. I had two of the designs signed by him and I can lay back and bask in the glory of having the first signed cards (and there is always the vague hope that they are the only signed copies).
It is impossible to ignore the word 'Cult' when one views the many LPC issues, covering such programmes as The Professionals, The Avengers, The Prisoner, Thunderbirds, Friends (a recent, but very popular addition to the TV world) and last but by no means least the only official South Park postcard series. Many objects relating to these programmes are very collectable, and can be expensive as well. Thankfully the LPC postcards are all still available and as yet have not increased in cost. But a word of warning, buy them now, nothing lasts forever and LPC will move on into other programmes, other films, and maybe even other subjects. This will eventually make all these postcards even more collectable (if that's possible). All this of course fails to make mention of all the other LPC postcards which cover James Bond, Man in The Iron Mask, Austin Powers (even more popular after this second movie), Mr Bean, Spawn, the Carry On movies and so many more posters that I just do not have the space to mention them all. Basically it is this simple, LPC postcards are well produced, professionally designed, cover collectable categories, are cheap and from a collectors point of view what more do you need, get out there and buy some.
